WHAT DOES OPEN, HONEST, ACCOUNTABLE & RESPONSIVE GOVERNMENT REALLY MEAN?
At public speaking events and in answers to questionnaires from various groups, I always state that I’m for Open, Honest, Accountable and Responsive city government.
Open, Honest, Accountable and Responsive are powerful words, but they are more than just campaign slogans to me. So how do they find their way into the lives of every Jonesboro citizen?
Unless a candidate can provide answers to that question, the words are hollow.
I believe Open government means that:

The city informs the citizens of upcoming and ongoing issues

Decisions affecting our citizens are made in open, public meetings and not behind closed doors
-
Information is freely and easily accessible by council members and citizens alike
-
Government always errs on the side of public disclosure and the community’s best interest
I believe Honest government means that:
- Public servants follow the rules--PERIOD
- The Mayor is candid with the other elected officials, city employees and the citizens
- The Mayor is willing to take the heat when unpopular or controversial decisions are made
Everyone required to disclose their financial interests to maintain the public’s confidence, FULLY DISCLOSES those financial interests-- You can find my disclosure HERE
If an elected official has a conflict of interest or even the appearance of a conflict of interest, then disclose that conflict and decline to vote on the related issue
Decisions are based on the best interests of the community as a whole and not a select few
I believe Accountable government means that:

Our government is answerable to the People. NOT the other way around

Elected officials and city employees are good stewards of your hard-earned tax dollars

Government gives clear accounting of spending. REGULARLY
-
ALL citizens are treated with the dignity and respect you deserve
I believe Responsive government means that:

When you call a city department with needs or concerns, THOSE NEEDS AND CONCERNS ARE ADDRESSED IN A TIMELY MANNER

City officials and employees treat citizens as the true OWNERS you are
I believe it all comes down to Personal Integrity and Ethical Behavior.
What does Open, Honest, Accountable, and Responsive government mean to you?
Are the other candidates giving you their answers?
Are they disclosing their financial interests to YOU, or are they hoping you won't be able to find them on your own?
